Food in Pasikuda: An East Coast Food Guide

Come to Pasikuda for the beach, but don’t let every meal become an afterthought.

Food in Pasikuda offers another way to experience Sri Lanka’s east coast. Fresh fish and prawns arrive from nearby waters, rice and curry takes on regional flavours, and breakfasts can begin with string hoppers rather than the familiar hotel buffet.

The dining scene isn’t as large as Colombo, Galle or Ella. That’s part of the experience. Look beyond international resort menus and you’ll discover food connected to the coast and the communities surrounding it.

Start With Seafood

If there is one thing you should make room for, it’s seafood.

Fishing remains part of everyday life around Pasikuda and nearby coastal communities. Our guide to hidden gems near Pasikuda describes how fishing boats return in the morning and how some local restaurants source their seafood from surrounding communities.

Depending on the day’s catch, you may come across fish, prawns, crab or cuttlefish.

Don’t automatically choose the most complicated dish.

A simply grilled fish with lime can be just as memorable as a rich seafood curry. If you’re ordering fresh fish, ask what is available that day rather than choosing only from a printed menu.

Try an East Coast Rice and Curry

Rice and curry changes as you travel around Sri Lanka.

When exploring food in Pasikuda, look for a meal that combines rice with several smaller curries and accompaniments.

You might have dhal, vegetables, coconut sambol and a fish or seafood curry together on the same plate.

The east of Sri Lanka has strong Tamil culinary influences, while nearby Batticaloa and surrounding areas also reflect Muslim food traditions. That gives travellers an opportunity to encounter flavours that may feel different from meals eaten elsewhere on the island.

If you’re curious, ask your hotel or local host what they would eat themselves rather than simply asking for the least spicy option.

Have String Hoppers for Breakfast

One morning, swap toast and eggs for string hoppers.

These thin nests of steamed rice-flour noodles are a familiar Sri Lankan breakfast and pair beautifully with dhal, coconut sambol and curry.

On the east coast, you may also find them served with fish curry.

The combination works particularly well before a slow beach day: light enough for the morning but much more connected to where you’re travelling.

Try Kottu When You Want Something Casual

You’ll probably hear kottu before you see it.

The dish is prepared by chopping roti on a hot metal griddle with vegetables, egg and, depending on your choice, meat or other additions.

The rapid sound of metal blades hitting the cooking surface is part of the experience.

Kottu is less about an elaborate beachfront dinner and more about eating something filling, informal and unmistakably Sri Lankan.

Look for Tropical Fruit and King Coconut

Not everything worth trying needs to arrive on a dinner plate.

Keep an eye out for mango, papaya, pineapple, banana and other seasonal fruit during your stay.

And when the east coast heat catches up with you, a fresh king coconut is difficult to beat.

Drink the coconut water first. If it’s opened for you afterwards, you can scoop out the soft flesh inside.

Go to Batticaloa for More Local Flavours

If you’re staying for several days, consider making food part of a trip to Batticaloa.

Pasikuda’s dining is strongly connected to its hotels and resorts, while Batticaloa gives you more opportunities to encounter the everyday food culture of the east.

Look for seafood, local rice and curry, string hoppers and dishes influenced by the area’s Tamil and Muslim communities.

And food doesn’t need to be the only reason to go. Batticaloa Fort, the lagoon and local streets can turn lunch into a full day away from the resort.

Our Pasikuda for couples guide also recommends exploring Batticaloa and the surrounding east coast when you want a change from the beach.

Make Dinner Part of the Coastal Experience

There will still be evenings when you don’t want to go anywhere.

That’s when resort dining comes into its own.

Choose a Sri Lankan dish, order fresh seafood if available and find a table close to the coast.

Discover Food in Pasikuda Beyond the Resort Menu

The best way to experience food in Pasikuda isn’t to chase a long checklist of dishes.

Mix things up.

Have string hoppers for breakfast. Try rice and curry at a local place. Ask what fish was caught that day. Drink a king coconut after the beach. Spend another day discovering Batticaloa’s flavours.

You can still enjoy the convenience of your hotel.

Just leave enough room to taste the east coast beyond it.
